Installation

One download is the whole app. Install it in about two minutes, then paste the hovernotch Pro licence key from your email to unlock it. No key yet? hovernotch Pro is a one-time purchase, and the app links straight to it.

Screens are from macOS 15 Sequoia; Sonoma 14 looks almost the same. Every step is also written out, so you can follow it without the pictures.

  1. Step 1

    Download hovernotch

    Every Download button on this site starts it in one click, or download hovernotch now. Your browser saves hovernotch.dmg to your Downloads folder (macOS Sonoma 14 or later · Apple silicon and Intel).

  2. Step 2

    Open the disk image and drag hovernotch to Applications

    Double-click the file in Downloads. A window opens with hovernotch and your Applications folder; drag hovernotch onto Applications.

    Then eject the disk image (the eject button next to “hovernotch” in the Finder sidebar) and delete the .dmg if you like.

  3. Step 3

    Open it once and click Done

    Open hovernotch from Applications. hovernotch isn't notarised by Apple yet, so macOS shows “hovernotch” Not Opened. Click Done (not Move to Bin).

  4. Step 4

    Privacy & Security › Open Anyway

    Open System Settings › Privacy & Security and scroll down to Security. Next to “hovernotch was blocked to protect your Mac”, click Open Anyway, confirm with Open Anyway again and enter your password or use Touch ID.

    You only do this once. On macOS 14 Sonoma you can instead Control-click hovernotch in Applications and choose Open.

  5. Step 5

    Allow Accessibility

    hovernotch uses this to draw volume, brightness and backlight in the island instead of the system pop-up, and to paste from the clipboard palette. The welcome window has a button for it, or open System Settings › Privacy & Security › Accessibility and switch hovernotch on. Without it the island still works; the HUDs simply show alongside the system pop-up.

  6. Step 6

    Optional: Calendars, Bluetooth, Full Disk Access

    Only if you use these features: Calendars for meetings, Join buttons and plain-language events; Bluetooth for AirPods battery; Full Disk Access only for notification peeks, which are off by default. The Mirror widget asks for the Camera the first time you open it. macOS asks the first time you switch one on.

  7. Step 7

    Activate your licence key

    The welcome window ends at Activate your licence. Paste the key Dodo Payments emailed you after checkout and click Activate. Every feature unlocks on this Mac; then point at the notch, or press ⌥⌘N to open the island.

    No key yet? Click Buy hovernotch Pro in the same window: it's a one-time purchase for 1 Mac, and the key arrives by email. Until a key is activated, hovernotch's features stay off. Closed the window? Click the hovernotch icon in the menu bar and choose Get hovernotch Pro…

  8. Step 8

    Uninstall (if you ever need to)

    Have a licence? Deactivate it first in Settings › Licence so you can use it on another Mac. Quit hovernotch from its menu bar icon and drag it from Applications to the Bin. To remove your history and settings as well, delete ~/Library/Application Support/hovernotch.

Before you download

hovernotch runs entirely on your Mac and has no upload feature. It goes online only to check your licence; the privacy policy lists exactly what is sent. Stuck on a step? See support or email hello@tealmac.com.
