Frequently asked
Yes. On Macs without a notch, on iMacs and on every external display, hovernotch shows a floating island just under the menu bar, with the same live activities, shelf and widgets. Choose per display: notch, island or off, and whether it shows on all displays, the main one, the built-in one or the one with the cursor.
Buy it once on this page. Your licence key arrives by email right after payment. Download hovernotch, open it, paste the key in the welcome window (or Settings › Licence) and every feature unlocks on that Mac. There's no account to create.
No. hovernotch Pro is a one-time purchase. The download itself is free and opens to the welcome and activation screen, so you can install it and grant permissions first, but the island and its features stay off until a licence key is activated. If it doesn't work as described on your Mac, the 7-day refund policy covers you.
From any Download button on this site, or the installation page, which walks through every step: open the disk image, drag hovernotch to Applications, allow it once in Privacy & Security, then paste your key.
$6.99 once during launch week, until 25 Oct, then $11.99 once. No subscription. A licence includes every feature and every update to the current major version.
Click Connect in Settings › Agents and hovernotch shows you the hook it will add to Claude Code's settings, backs up the file and adds it. When Claude Code wants to run a tool, the island shows the tool and the command with Allow, Deny and Always allow. When it asks you a question, the options become buttons; when it finishes a plan, you can approve it or send it back with a note. If you don't answer within 60 seconds (you can change this), the request goes back to the terminal's own prompt, so nothing is ever stuck. Gemini CLI tool calls and Cursor's shell and MCP calls can be approved from the notch too; Codex CLI sessions show in the list and tell you when they finish. A click on a session brings you to its terminal tab or tmux pane.
They are estimates. Anthropic doesn't publish its limits, and its own meter also counts what you use on claude.ai, so hovernotch works out the 5-hour window and the week from the Claude Code transcripts on this Mac (read only, never uploaded). You can set your own budget and copy the weekly reset time from /usage to make them closer.
A padlock in the notch that turns green and folds away when you unlock (or a fingerprint ring, if you prefer), and under the clock what's playing with a scrubber, volume and the current lyric line, plus a charging bolt when you plug in. Battery, AirPods, your next meeting, weather, a running timer and your Focus can be added one by one in Settings › Lock Screen. It all runs on your Mac and costs nothing while the Mac is unlocked.
No. hovernotch skips anything an app marks as concealed or transient, ignores password managers such as 1Password, Bitwarden, Passwords and Keychain Access, and lets you add your own exclusions or pause for an hour. History is stored only on your Mac, protected, and never sent anywhere.
Yes, if you want it to. With Accessibility permission hovernotch draws volume, brightness and keyboard backlight in the island instead of the system pop-up, in four styles. Each one can be turned off on its own. Without the permission it simply shows the change alongside the system pop-up.
Yes, as a beta on macOS 14.2 or later: Settings › App Volume lists the apps playing sound and lets you turn any of them down (never above 100 %). It is off by default and asks once for permission to record system audio, which it uses only to play that app back more quietly. It is marked beta because it hasn't been tested on every output yet.
When nothing is moving it sits at about 0 % CPU. Visualisers and timers stop when the island is closed, the lock-screen features cost nothing while you're unlocked, and in Low Power Mode the island switches to solid black and pauses animation. Reduce Motion is respected everywhere.
One licence activates hovernotch on 1 Mac at a time. To move it, open Settings › Licence on the old Mac and click “Deactivate this Mac”, then paste the same key on the new one.
Yes, within 7 days of purchase for verified issues: if hovernotch doesn't work as described on your Mac and we can't fix it, you get your money back. A change of mind isn't covered. Email hello@tealmac.com with your order email.
hovernotch isn't notarised by Apple yet, so macOS asks you to confirm the first launch. Open it once, click Done, then go to System Settings › Privacy & Security, scroll down and click “Open Anyway” next to the hovernotch message. You only do this once. The installation page shows each step.
hovernotch needs Accessibility to replace it. Open System Settings › Privacy & Security › Accessibility, switch hovernotch on (or off and on again), then quit and reopen hovernotch. Each HUD can also be turned off in Settings › HUD.
Open Settings › Island › Displays and choose Island (or Notch) for that display, and check “Show on”: all displays, the main one, the built-in one or the display with the cursor.
Open Settings › Agents and click Connect next to Claude Code. hovernotch shows the hook it adds to ~/.claude/settings.json, backs the file up and adds it. Start a new Claude Code session afterwards.
Open Settings › Agents, click Disconnect and then Connect next to Claude Code so the current hook is installed, and start a new Claude Code session. Approvals, questions and plan reviews all arrive through that hook.
That's for jumping to the exact tab of a coding session. hovernotch only reads the list of tabs and selects the right one; it never types into your terminal. Say no and it simply brings the terminal app to the front.
Another app may already use ⌥⌘N. Open hovernotch › Settings › Shortcuts and record a different one.
In the welcome window's last step, Activate your licence. Already past it? Click the hovernotch icon in the menu bar, choose Licence, paste the key and click Activate.
Search your inbox for the email from Dodo Payments, or write to hello@tealmac.com from your order email and we'll resend it.
Quit hovernotch from its menu bar icon, then drag hovernotch from Applications to the Bin. To remove its history and settings too, delete ~/Library/Application Support/hovernotch. If you used Connect for a coding agent, click Disconnect first so the hook is removed. If you have a licence, deactivate it first in Settings › Licence so you can use it on another Mac.
