oriel for Mac

Install oriel

Install oriel on the Mac whose windows you want to share and on the Mac you want to see them on. It takes about two minutes on each. Sharing is free; viewing is free for 3 days on each Mac.

Install guide

Do steps 1 to 4 on both Macs. The permissions in steps 5 and 6 are asked for only where they are needed. Screens are from macOS 15 Sequoia; Sonoma looks almost the same.

  1. Step 1 (both Macs)

    Download oriel

Download oriel (3 MB). Your browser saves oriel.dmg to Downloads. macOS 14 Sonoma or later, Apple silicon and Intel.

  2. Step 2 (both Macs)

    Drag oriel to Applications

Double-click the file in Downloads. In the window that opens, drag oriel onto Applications. Then eject the disk image from the Finder sidebar.

  3. Step 3 (both Macs)

Open it once and click Done

Open oriel from Applications. oriel isn't notarised by Apple yet, so macOS shows “oriel” Not Opened. Click Done (not Move to Bin).

  4. Step 4 (both Macs)

Privacy & Security, then Open Anyway

Open System Settings › Privacy & Security and scroll down to Security. Next to “oriel was blocked to protect your Mac”, click Open Anyway, confirm with Open Anyway again and enter your password or use Touch ID. You do this once per Mac.

On macOS 14 Sonoma you can instead Control-click oriel in Applications and choose Open.

  5. Step 5 (both Macs)

    Allow Local Network

The first time oriel looks for your other Macs, macOS asks whether it may find devices on your local network. Click Allow. Missed it? Turn oriel on in System Settings › Privacy & Security › Local Network.

  6. Step 6 (the sharing Mac)

    Allow Screen Recording and Accessibility

On the Mac whose windows you share, oriel needs Screen & System Audio Recording to send a window's picture and sound, and Accessibility so your clicks and typing reach that window. oriel's setup window has a button for each; or switch oriel on in System Settings › Privacy & Security under each heading. macOS may ask you to quit and reopen oriel.

The Mac you view on doesn't need either.

  7. Step 7 (the viewing Mac)

Pair, then view (and add your licence)

Click oriel in the menu bar and choose the other Mac. Both screens show the same 6-digit code: if they match, click Allow on the sharing Mac. Then pick a window.

Viewing is free for 3 days on this Mac. Bought a licence? Choose Licence… in the menu and paste your key. Macs with the same key pair automatically, so paste it on each of your Macs (up to 3). A headless Mac mini? See the headless guide.

  8. Step 8 (any Mac)

Uninstall (if you ever need to)

Quit oriel from its menu bar icon and drag it from Applications to the Bin. To remove its settings and paired Macs too, delete ~/Library/Application Support/oriel.
