Screens are from macOS 15 Sequoia; Sonoma 14 looks almost the same. Every step is also written out, so you can follow it without the pictures.

  1. Step 1

    Download pinhole

    Click Download for Mac above. Your browser saves pinhole.dmg to your Downloads folder.

  2. Step 2

    Open the disk image and drag pinhole to Applications

    Double-click the file in Downloads. A window opens with pinhole and your Applications folder; drag pinhole onto Applications.

    Then eject the disk image (the eject button next to “pinhole” in the Finder sidebar) and delete the .dmg if you like.

  3. Step 3

    Open it once and click Done

    Open pinhole from Applications. pinhole isn't notarised by Apple yet, so macOS shows “pinhole” Not Opened. Click Done (not Move to Bin).

  4. Step 4

    Privacy & Security › Open Anyway

    Open System Settings › Privacy & Security and scroll down to Security. Next to “pinhole was blocked to protect your Mac”, click Open Anyway, confirm with Open Anyway again and enter your password or use Touch ID.

    You only do this once. On macOS 14 Sonoma you can instead Control-click pinhole in Applications and choose Open.

  5. Step 5

    Allow Screen Recording

    pinhole needs this to see your screen when you capture. The welcome window has a button for it, or open System Settings › Privacy & Security › Screen & System Audio Recording and switch pinhole on. If macOS asks, click Quit & Reopen.

  6. Step 6

    Optional: Accessibility, Microphone, Camera

    Only if you use these features: Accessibility shows your keystrokes in recordings and lets pinhole scroll for you during a scrolling capture; Microphone records your voice; Camera adds the camera bubble. macOS asks the first time you switch one on.

  7. Step 7

    Start the free trial, or activate your key

    In the welcome window click Start 1-day free trial: every feature for 1 day (24 hours), no card, no account. Then press ⇧⌘1 to capture.

    Bought pinhole Pro? Click the pinhole icon in the menu bar, choose pinhole Pro…, paste the key from your email under “Have a licence key?” and click Activate.

  8. Step 8

    Uninstall (if you ever need to)

    Have a licence? Deactivate it first in Settings › Licence so you can use it on another Mac. Quit pinhole from its menu bar icon and drag it from Applications to the Bin. To remove your history and settings as well, delete ~/Library/Application Support/pinhole.

Before you download
