The app
thockmac uses the macOS Input Monitoring permission to hear that a key went down or up, so it can play a sound. It never stores what you type and is silent in secure (password) fields. It can't type, click or see your screen.
Kept on your Mac only: how many times each key was pressed per day (for your heat map), keys per hour, clicks and scroll notches per day, your best typing speed each day, and your settings. The order of keys is never stored, so nothing you type can be reconstructed. Export or reset your stats any time; delete the app and its folder in ~/Library/Application Support/thockmac and nothing remains.
Microphone: only while you use “Record your switch”, and the recordings stay on your Mac. To go quiet on calls, the app checks whether any app is using the microphone; it never listens to it.
Network: the app talks to our server only to start or check your free trial and licence (a few times a day), and, if you switch on the live map, to send how many keys you pressed and the switch feel every few seconds. Your Mac is identified by a one-way hash of its hardware ID, so one trial per Mac works without an account.
This website
The site stores your sound and theme preferences in your browser's local storage. It uses no analytics, advertising or tracking cookies.
Live map: when you type on this page, the site sends how many keys were pressed (never which ones) every few seconds. Our server looks up your city from the connection, rounds it to about 10 km, and adds your count to that city. Your IP address is not stored; a short hash of it is held in memory for a few seconds to stop flooding. A random number for your browser tab is used for the same purpose and is not stored.
