Type to find any item

A drawing of a MacBook menu bar with a notch. Before: too many icons, and the ones on the left are lost behind the notch.

The problem

Your menu bar is fuller than it looks.

Every app you install can add an icon to the menu bar. On a MacBook with a notch there's even less room, and macOS doesn't tell you when one goes missing.

Without transom

Icons that don't fit slide behind the notch, where you can't see them or click them.

With transom

Only the icons you choose stay in the bar; the rest wait in a panel, one click away.

How it works

Hide. Show. Find.

Three things, and you already know how to do all of them.

  1. Step 1

    Hide

Pick the icons you don't need to see all the time. transom tucks them away, so your menu bar shows only what matters.

  2. Step 2

    Show

Click the transom icon, hover over the bar, or press ⌃⌥⌘M. The hidden icons drop down in a small panel. Click one to open its menu.

  3. Step 3

    Find

Press ⌃⌥Space and type a few letters of any app's name. Return opens its menu, even if it's hidden or behind the notch.

Features

Everything a menu bar should let you do.

14 features in version 1, each explained in plain words.

  • Shown, Hidden, Always hidden

Every icon goes in one of three places. transom's own icon marks where the hidden ones start; Always hidden ones live only in the panel.

  • The transom panel

Every hidden icon in a small drop-down under the menu bar. Click one and its menu opens, as if you'd clicked it in the bar. Arrow keys and Return work too.

  • Notch rescue

On a MacBook with a notch, transom spots the icons stuck behind it, shows a badge, and offers to move them to the panel, where you can click them again.

  • Show them your way

Click, hover over the bar, scroll on it, or use the shortcut. Hidden icons tuck themselves away again after 5 seconds or when the pointer leaves.

  • Arrange by dragging

Settings lists every icon under Shown, Hidden and Always hidden. Drag one to move it or change the order, and transom moves the real icon for you.

  • Profiles per display

Keep one layout for your desk and another for the laptop on its own. transom switches by itself when you plug in or unplug a display.

  • Spacing

Tighten the gaps to fit more icons in a crowded bar, or widen them. Reset puts the macOS default back.

  • Shortcuts and the Shortcuts app

Every shortcut can be recorded again. Shortcuts actions and transom:// links let a Focus or a script show icons or switch profile.

  • Your kind of icon

transom's own icon can be a fan light, a chevron, a dot or a thin line, can show how many icons are hidden, or can hide itself.

  • Set up in a minute

Four short steps explain what it does and each permission, check them live, and suggest hiding whatever is behind the notch first.

  • Safe by design

Nothing moves without you. “Show everything” puts every icon back with one click, and quitting transom does the same.

Every feature in detail

Permissions, in plain words

It asks for one thing, and says why.

macOS keeps apps from touching each other's menu bar icons unless you allow it. Here is exactly what transom asks for, and what it does with it.

Required

Why it asks for Accessibility

Accessibility is how macOS lets an app see the icons other apps put in the menu bar, open their menus and move them. transom can't tidy your menu bar without it.

  • Reads each menu bar icon's name and position.
  • Opens an icon's menu when you click it in the panel.
  • Moves icons only when you drag them in Settings.
  • Never reads your windows, your typing or your files. Nothing is recorded or sent.

Optional

What Screen Recording is for

Only for pictures. With it, the transom panel shows a small picture of each hidden icon, exactly as it looks in the bar. Without it, the panel shows the app's own icon and name instead, and everything else works the same.

  • Looks only at the menu bar icons, only while the panel is open.
  • Nothing is recorded, saved or sent.
  • Skip it during setup, and change your mind any time.

Safety

You can't lose an icon.

A menu bar app should never leave you wondering where something went. transom is built so that it can't.

  • Nothing moves without you

transom hides icons with a marker of its own. It only rearranges other apps' icons when you drag them in Settings, and it tells you before it does.

  • One click puts everything back

Choose “Show everything” from transom's menu, or open transom://reset, and every icon is back in view.

  • Quitting shows everything

When transom quits, every icon it was hiding comes back into the menu bar. Nothing is ever lost.

Privacy

Your menu bar stays yours.

transom works on your Mac, for you. Nothing about your apps or your layout ever leaves it.

  • No account

Buy, paste your key, done. Nothing to sign up for.

  • No tracking

No analytics, no ads, no crash reporter that phones home.

  • One network call

The licence check, when you activate and now and then after. It's the only time transom goes online.

  • Read the privacy policy

Questions

Straight answers.

What does transom do, in one sentence?

It keeps your Mac's menu bar tidy: you choose which icons stay in view, the rest are tucked away, and you get them back with a click, a hover, a shortcut or by typing their name.

Some of my menu bar icons vanished behind the notch. Will transom bring them back?

Yes, that's one of the main reasons it exists. When a MacBook's menu bar has more icons than fit, macOS puts some behind the notch, where you can't see or click them. transom spots those, shows a small badge, and offers to move them into its panel, where one click opens each one's menu.

Does it work on macOS 27?

macOS 27 changed how the menu bar works; we're testing transom on it now and will confirm here. Until then we only promise what we've tested: macOS 14 Sonoma or later, tested on macOS 26. If you buy it and it doesn't work on your Mac, you get your money back.

Which Macs and versions of macOS does it run on?

macOS 14 Sonoma or later, on Apple silicon and Intel Macs, with or without a notch. Tested on macOS 26.

Why does transom need Accessibility?

Accessibility is the macOS permission that lets an app see the other icons in the menu bar, open their menus and move them when you ask. That's all transom uses it for. It doesn't read your screen, your typing or your files, and nothing is recorded or sent.

What is Screen Recording for, and do I have to allow it?

You don't have to. It's only used to show a small picture of each hidden icon in the transom panel. Without it, the panel shows the app's own icon and name instead, and everything else works the same. Nothing is recorded, saved or sent.

Will transom move my icons around on its own?

No. Nothing moves without you. transom hides icons by placing its own marker in the menu bar, and it only rearranges other apps' icons when you drag them in its Settings.

What happens if I quit transom?

Every hidden icon comes back into the menu bar, exactly as it was before. And at any time, “Show everything” in transom's menu puts every icon back in view with one click.

Does it work with more than one display?

Yes. macOS shows the same menu bar icons on each display, and transom's hiding applies to all of them. Profiles let you keep a different layout for each set of displays, such as “Desk” with an external display and “Laptop” on its own, and transom switches when you plug in or unplug.

My old menu bar app stopped working after an update. Can I switch to transom?

Yes. Quit the old app first, so two apps aren't trying to arrange the same icons, then set up transom: it takes about a minute and starts by suggesting what to hide. If your old app had icons hidden, quitting it usually brings them back first.

Can I move my licence to a new Mac?

Yes. One licence works on 2 Macs at a time. Deactivate it in transom's Settings on the old Mac, then activate the same key on the new one.

How much is it?

$9.99 once at launch, until 25 November 2026, 18:30 UTC, then $14.99. One licence works on 2 Macs, with no subscription and no account. There's no free trial: if transom doesn't work on your Mac and we can't fix it, you get a refund within 7 days.

Can I control it from the Shortcuts app?

Yes. transom adds Shortcuts actions to show hidden icons, hide them and switch profile, and it understands transom:// links (show, hide, search, reset and profile/<name>), so a Focus automation can change your layout.

Does transom collect any data?

No. There's no account, no analytics and no tracking. The only time it goes online is to activate and check your licence. Your layouts and settings stay on your Mac.

Where can I get it?

Only from tealmac.com/transom. Apps from the Mac App Store can't read or move other apps' menu bar icons, so transom is sold and downloaded directly.
