transom · Features

Every feature, explained.

All 14 features in transom 1.0, in plain words. The drawings are illustrations, not screenshots.

Every day

Hide what you don't need and reach it in a moment.

01

Shown, Hidden and Always hidden

Every menu bar icon goes in one of three places, and you decide which.

  • Shown: always in the menu bar, like now.
  • Hidden: tucked away, and back with a click, a hover or a shortcut.
  • Always hidden: never in the bar, only in the transom panel. Good for icons you use once a month.
  • transom's own icon marks where the hidden ones start.

02

Show them your way

Click the transom icon, hover over the menu bar, scroll on it, or press a shortcut.

  • Click transom's icon to show the hidden icons.
  • Optional: hover over the menu bar (with a short delay you can set), or scroll on it.
  • Shortcut: Control-Option-Command-M by default. Record your own in Settings.
  • They hide again after 5 seconds or when the pointer leaves, whichever you pick.

Default shortcuts: ⌃⌥⌘M

03

The transom panel

A small drop-down under the menu bar with every hidden icon. Click one and its menu opens.

  • Lists your Hidden and Always hidden icons, each with its app's name.
  • Click an icon and its menu opens, just as if you'd clicked it in the bar.
  • Works from the keyboard too: arrow keys to move, Return to open.
  • With Screen Recording allowed, it shows a picture of each icon. Without it, the app's own icon and name.

04

Notch rescue

On a MacBook with a notch, transom spots icons stuck behind it and brings them back.

  • When there are more icons than fit, macOS puts some behind the notch, where you can't see or click them.
  • transom notices which ones, shows a small badge on its icon, and offers to move them to the panel.
  • Those icons then open from the panel like any other.

Set it up your way

Layouts, displays, spacing and automation.

06

Arrange by dragging

Settings shows every icon in its section. Drag to move or reorder, and transom does the rest.

  • Drag an icon between Shown, Hidden and Always hidden, or change the order.
  • transom moves the real icons for you, after a short “Hands off the mouse for a moment” notice.
  • Prefer the classic way? Command-drag in the menu bar still works, and transom keeps up.

07

Profiles for each set of displays

Save layouts and switch automatically when you plug in a display, or from Shortcuts.

  • For example “Desk” with your external display, and “Laptop” on its own.
  • transom switches to the right one when your displays change.
  • Or switch from the Shortcuts app or a link (transom://profile/Desk), so a Focus can change your layout.

08

Spacing

Tighter or wider gaps between menu bar icons, with a Reset button.

  • Fit more icons in a crowded bar, or give them room to breathe.
  • Some apps pick up the new spacing only after they're reopened; transom tells you so.
  • Reset puts the macOS default back.

09

Your choice of transom icon

A fan light, a chevron, a dot or a thin line, and it can show how many icons are hidden.

  • Pick the style that suits your bar.
  • Or hide transom's icon while everything is collapsed.
  • Optional count of hidden icons.

10

Shortcuts and links

Actions for the Shortcuts app, and transom:// links for scripts and automations.

  • Shortcuts actions: Show hidden icons, Hide icons, Switch profile.
  • Links: transom://show, transom://hide, transom://search and transom://profile/<name>.

Safe and simple

The parts that let you stop thinking about it.

11

Safe by design

Nothing moves without you. One click puts everything back. Quitting shows everything.

  • transom only moves an icon when you ask it to.
  • “Show everything” in its menu (or transom://reset) puts every icon back in view in one go.
  • When transom quits, every hidden icon comes back.

12

Set up in a minute

Four short steps: what it does, Accessibility, optional Screen Recording, and what to hide.

  • Each permission is explained in plain words, and checked live so you never wonder whether it worked.
  • It suggests hiding whatever is behind the notch first.

13

Pay once, no account

One licence key for 2 Macs. No subscription, no sign-up.

  • Activate with the key from your order email.
  • Move it to another Mac whenever you like.
  • The only thing transom sends is the licence check.

14

Accessible

Full keyboard use, VoiceOver labels and Reduce Motion support.

  • Everything in the panel and Settings works from the keyboard.
  • Every control has a VoiceOver label.
  • With Reduce Motion on, nothing slides or fades.
