transom · Install guide
Install transom
About two minutes, start to finish. Every step is written out, so you can follow it without the pictures. The screens are drawn, and may look slightly different on your version of macOS (macOS 14+).
Step 1
Download transom
Buy transom, then use the Download button on the thank-you page. Any time later, enter your licence key on the download page to get it again.
Open transom.dmg from your Downloads folder and drag transom onto Applications. Then eject the disk image.
Step 2
Open it
Open transom from Applications. A short welcome explains what it does.
If macOS says it can't open transom, that's expected for an app downloaded from its maker's site rather than the App Store. Do this once:
- Click Done on the message.
- Open System Settings › Privacy & Security, scroll down to Security and click Open Anyway next to transom.
- Click Open Anyway again to confirm, and enter your password or use Touch ID if asked.
Step 3
Allow Accessibility (required)
transom needs Accessibility to see the other icons in your menu bar, open their menus and move them when you ask. Click Open System Settings in transom's welcome window and switch transom on under Privacy & Security › Accessibility. macOS may ask for your password or Touch ID.
The welcome window checks it live and moves on by itself as soon as it's allowed. transom never reads your windows, your typing or your files, and nothing is recorded or sent.
Step 4
Allow Screen Recording (optional)
Only for pictures of hidden icons in the transom panel. Switch transom on under Privacy & Security › Screen Recording (called Screen & System Audio Recording on newer macOS), or click Skip.
Without it, the panel shows each app's own icon and name instead. Nothing is recorded, saved or sent. You can change your mind later in transom's Settings.
Step 5
Pick what to hide
transom lists every icon in your menu bar and ticks the ones behind the notch first. Untick anything you want to keep in view, tick anything else you'd rather not see, and click Done.
To see hidden icons, click the transom icon or press ⌃⌥⌘M. To find one by name, press ⌃⌥Space. You can change all of this later in Settings › Layout.
Step 6
Activate your licence key
Paste the licence key from your order email and click Activate. One key works on 2 Macs. There's no free trial: until a key is activated, transom shows only this screen.
If an icon ever seems to be missing
It's in the transom panel: click the transom icon, or press ⌃⌥Space and type its name. To put every icon back in the menu bar at once, choose Show everything from transom's menu, or open transom://reset. Quitting transom does the same.
Coming from another menu bar app
If your old menu bar app stopped working after an update, quit it before you set up transom, so two apps aren't arranging the same icons. Quitting it usually brings back whatever it had hidden; then transom can tidy from a clean start.
Uninstall
Quit transom from its menu (every hidden icon comes back), then drag it from Applications to the Bin. To remove its settings and profiles too, delete ~/Library/Application Support/transom. To move your licence to another Mac, deactivate it in transom's Settings first.
